Howard Simon to discuss state’s Constitutional Revision Committee’s work during April 7 meeting
The annual meeting and board election of the Sarasota Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida will feature a talk by Howard Simon, executive director of the Florida ACLU, the chapter has announced.
The meeting will be held on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 3975 Fruitville Road in Sarasota.
Simon’s talk titled, Our Fundamental Values Are Up For A Vote, will be followed by a question-and-answer session, a news release says. The meeting is free and open to the public, “as always,” the release points out.
“There is a lot of speculation about what the Constitutional Revision Commission will actually put on the November ballot,” said Pete Tannen, president of the Sarasota ACLU, in the release. “And Howard is the one person who can give us an up-to-the minute look at exactly what is going on and which of our constitutional rights are likely to come under attack.”
The Sarasota Chapter of the ACLU of Florida serves Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties, the release explains. In the past year, its membership has doubled, to more than 3,600 members — “a new high in our 43-year history here!” the release notes.
