Commemoration planned on Jan. 29 on Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee campus
Floreta Faber, the Albanian ambassador to the United States, will be the special guest at the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration on Jan. 29, the federation has announced.
This year’s program, which will begin at 3 p.m., will celebrate Albania, “a country that played a key role in saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust,” a news release explains. During the event, Dr. Anna Kohen, an area resident who was instrumental in coordinating the ambassador’s visit, and Yael Hershfield, the senior associate regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, will present the league’s Courage to Care award to Faber, the release adds. “The award honors rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust era,” the release explains.
The program also will feature the short documentary film, Rescue in Albania, along with traditional Albanian dancing presented by the Albanian Heritage Foundation of Tampa, the release notes.
The event is free and open to the public, the release points out. It will be held in the Beatrice Friedman Theater on the federation campus, which is located at 580 McIntosh Road in Sarasota. The United Nations General Assembly designated Jan. 27 — the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp — as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. “On this annual day of commemoration, the UN urges every member state to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides,” the release says.
