The gift is the second in a week made at that level
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (Selby Gardens) has received $1 million that will go toward Phase 1 of the Downtown Sarasota campus’ master plan, the Gardens announced this week.
This money comes from The Floyd C. Johnson and Flo Singer Johnson Foundation, a news release notes.
The report of this latest gift follows the announcement last week that Jean Weidner Goldstein of Sarasota, who is a member of Selby Gardens Board of Trustees and co-chair of the capital campaign for the master plan, contributed $1 million toward the endowment for the new facilities.
“The environmental sustainability aspects of Selby Gardens’ Master Plan are innovative and progressive,” said Diane Barth, board president of The Floyd C. Johnson and Flo Singer Johnson Foundation, in the release. “This Master Plan will positively impact our entire region,”

To date, Selby Gardens has more than 85% of the $42.5 million needed for Phase I — more than $36 million — the release points out. Selby Gardens will break ground for Phase 1 during a ceremony planned for Thursday, June 3, the release notes.
“The three-phase plan will take several years to complete,” the release explains. “Selby Gardens’ trustees, leadership donors and campaign co-chairs Jean Weidner Goldstein, Cornelia Matson and Pauline Wamsler are spearheading the fundraising effort, Innovating a Greener Future- Living Inspiration for The Living Museum®: The Campaign for Selby Gardens.”
