‘We Can Do It!’ the theme of this year’s observance
The Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee is seeking women who served in World War II, as well as women who supported the war effort at home, to participate in the annual Veterans Day Parade, the City of Sarasota has announced.
The theme for this year’s parade and ceremony will be We Can Do It! The phrase was made famous by the fictional World War II-era icon Rosie the Riveter, a city news release says.
As men enlisted in the military during the war, thousands of women were hired in an effort to boost the diminished workforce; many women took jobs in factories, the release explains. “Rosie the Riveter became a symbol of their efforts.” The members of the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee hope to recognize those women and honor all female veterans at this year’s Veterans Day events, the release adds.
Hosted by the City of Sarasota in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, the parade and ceremony will be held on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Osprey Avenue in downtown Sarasota; it will end at approximately 11 a.m. at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at the corner of Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue, where a ceremony will be held.
