New lawn watering restrictions throughout southwest Florida began on Monday, June 5, because of the ongoing drought and water shortage, the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has announced.

Lawn watering is being limited to once a week from June 5 through Aug. 1.

People whose home addresses in Sarasota County end in even numbers may water their lawns on Tuesdays before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

Those with addresses ending in odd numbers may water their lawns on Thursdays before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

Car washing is included in the once-a-week restriction, City Manager Tom Barwin reported in his June 2 newsletter, while

The hand watering of plants may be done at any time.

“Reclaimed water is still subject to voluntary watering hours,” Barwin added.

“We hope everyone follows these new restrictions and does their part to conserve water in any way they can,” Barwin wrote.
