Gary Leatherman, longtime director of the Sarasota County School District’s Communications and Community Relations Department, will retire on June 30, the district has announced.

He has served in that role for more than 10 years, a news release notes.

Former Superintendent Gary Norris hired Leatherman, who replaced Sheila Weiss. Weiss had handled district communications for 11 years — from 1995 to 2006. Norris left the district in 2008 for a position with a Kansas school district.

The district has contracted with Three Six Oh Public Relations, “a boutique Sarasota-based public relations firm, to expand and oversee the district’s communications efforts and develop a strategic communications plan,” the release explains. The district will issue a request for proposals this summer for a long-term contract with a public relations company,” the release adds.
