Second annual Free Family 5K Walk/Run to be held Sept. 24 on Nokomis Beach

Optional 1.5-mile walk/run will be part of event

The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County (DOH-Sarasota) and the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department will host their second annual Free Family 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Nokomis Beach, the county has announced.

Nokomis Beach is located at 100 Casey Key Road in Nokomis. The race will begin promptly at 8 a.m., “rain or shine,” a news release says. A 1.5-mile walk/run option also will be available. No pre-registration is required, the release adds.

“The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about Florida’s Healthiest Weight Initiative and the benefits of maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity,” the release explains. Family Health & Fitness Day USA® also will be observed on Sept. 24, the release notes.

People with all fitness levels will be welcome, the release adds. “This free event is designed for the whole family to enjoy,” it says. Heart-healthy snacks will be provided following the event, the release points out.
