Sarasota County will celebrate National Arbor Day with tree adoption events on April 26 and 27, part of the local “Treejuvenation” urban forestry program, the county has announced.

Individuals may visit any of four locations across the county late this month to adopt a green buttonwood or dahoon holly sapling for transplant, while supplies last, a news release says.

“Green buttonwoods and dahoon hollies are ideal trees for small- to medium-sized home lots,” said Marguerite Beckford, commercial horticulture agent with the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Program in Sarasota County, in the release. “They grow to provide shade and beauty without overwhelming lawns and landscapes,” she added in the release.

“Arbor Day, observed nationally on the last Friday in April, highlights the key roles that trees play in our lives, from air cleansing to recreational opportunities,” the release explains. “Sarasota County Extension’s ‘Treejuvenation’ program builds on that through educational outreach, workshops, and other local efforts,” the release adds.

Adopt-a-sapling stations, hosted by county staff and Master Gardener volunteers, may be found at the following Sarasota County Extension Plant Clinics on the dates provided:

  1. Beautiful trees, wonderful program, and we need more and more trees to clean our air and beautify our city.

Editor’s Note: Just to be clear, this is a countywide program.
