To qualify, organizations had to meet ‘rigorous criteria’
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is one of just 39 organizations to win Gallup’s global Great Workplace Award, Gallup has announced.
“The award honors the world’s best workplaces for creating an environment and culture that inspires employee commitment and engagement,” a Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) news release points out.
“When employees are engaged, they are passionate and creative, and their commitment accelerates growth and innovation,” said Gallup in its April 18 announcement. “These employees are invested in their jobs and workplaces — they care about their company’s future. As a result, they help lead the way to outstanding performance — across industries, company sizes and nationalities, and in good economic times and bad.”
To qualify for the award, an organization must meet rigorous criteria, which included a high, qualifying response rate on Gallup’s 2017 employee engagement survey and a score that placed it in the upper echelon of organizations in Gallup’s global database, the release explains. An organization also had to demonstrate how its “engagement approach improves performance outcomes,” the release adds.
Its workplace award winners excel in areas where many other organizations struggle, Gallup says. “Worldwide, just 15 percent of employees are engaged,” the release notes, while the engagement level among the award recipients is 70% or higher. “On average, Gallup’s top performers have 14 engaged employees to just one disengaged — nearly seven times the U.S. rate and more than 15 times the rate for workforces globally,” the release says.
“Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder credits the workplace recognition to the organization’s longstanding commitment to the community and dedication to providing the best possible patient experience and care, the release adds.
Founded in 1925, Sarasota Memorial has grown from a 32-bed hospital to one of the largest public health systems in Florida, with more than 900,000 patient visits a year, the release notes. It is Sarasota County’s largest employer, with about 5,700 people on staff.
“There is a true sense of ownership here … You see it in the organization as a whole, where everyone, from the Hospital Board to bedside staff, believe in and support our public mission,” Verinder said in the release. “As a leader, my goal is to make sure everyone has the tools and support they need to do what they do best, so they can leave each day feeling that they’ve made a difference.”
