Drowning reported on southern end of Lido Beach

Police Department continuing investigation

On Sunday, April 23, Sarasota Police Department detectives were investigating a drowning that occurred in the 1900 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive, the agency reported.

That is the address of the First Lido condominium complex on Lido Key Beach. It is located on the southern end of the island.

The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. on April 23, the Police Department noted in a news release. The investigation is ongoing, the release added.

No details about the victim were provided.

However, in a thread of comments about the incident, posted on the Police Department’s Facebook page, a woman who wrote that she was on the beach at the time confirmed that the victim was an adult.

The National Weather Service report for conditions at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport between approximately 2 p.m. and close to 4 p.m. on April 23 show that the wind was out of the northeast, shifting to the east, mostly at 9 mph, with the sky ranging between fair and mostly cloudy. The highs were in the upper 80s.

A couple of other comments on the Police Department’s Facebook page indicated that rip currents are common in the area where the drowning was reported.
