Last week, City of Sarasota staff marked what City Manager Tom Barwin called “a significant step” in the creation of the roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Fruitville Road: Work crews shifted the northbound lanes to the newly completed eastern half of the traffic structure.

With that having been accomplished, Barwin reported in his Aug. 14 newsletter, the center and a portion of the western side of the roundabout will be constructed next, necessitating the continued closure of the westbound lane of Fruitville Road between Cocoanut Avenue and U.S. 41. Eastbound Fruitville Road will be open to traffic, he pointed out.

Please watch your speed,” Barwin emphasized. “Drivers are zipping through this area much faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit. This is an active work site,” Barwin continued in the newsletter. “[T]he reduced speed is for the safety of all, particularly the construction workers.

“The project remains on schedule to be completed in the fall,” Barwin added. The roundabout will improve traffic flow and significantly reduce the number of potential vehicle and pedestrian conflict points, making it much safer than the old, signalized intersection,” he wrote. Further, “it will [greatly] enhance connectivity with our beautiful bayfront,” he noted.
