Teen shot during June 22 incident in Newtown

Sarasota Police Department encouraging anyone with information to call Criminal Investigations Division

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, in the 2900 block of Gillespie Avenue in Sarasota, the department has reported.

A teenager who was shot was transported to the hospital, a news release said.

“This is an active investigation,” the release pointed out, adding that more details would be provided as they became available.

The 2900 block of Gillespie Avenue is west of Washington Boulevard (U.S. 301) and east of North Osprey Avenue, a map shows. The location is north of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, in Newtown, the city’s traditionally African-American community.

On the Police Department’s Facebook page, in response to the report of the incident, one person asked on June 26 whether any new information was available about the shooting victim. A member of the Police Department replied only that the case remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 941-263-6070.
