Venice resident files for District 3 County Commission seat that Detert will give up in 2024

Gregory Wood ran for School Board in 2022

A Venice Republican candidate filed last week for the Sarasota County Commission District 3 seat, which Commissioner Nancy Detert will have to give up in 2024 because of term limits.

Gregory Wood submitted his papers to the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Office on Feb. 9, the office’s website shows.

Wood’s LinkedIn account says he is a Realtor and superintendent of the Tropical Shores Building Group in Sarasota. The company’s website says it handles residential and commercial construction on “Florida’s Gulf Coast.”

That account also includes this statement below the About heading: “Excited to be running for Sarasota County Commissioners District 3.”

Additionally, for a little more than three years, Greg was executive director and head coach of the Sarasota Scullers youth rowing program in Osprey, his LinkedIn account notes.

Wood also participated in the Winter 2021 Gulf Coast Community Foundation Board Institute for members of boards of directors of nonprofit organizations, the Foundation’s website shows. He was accepted to the Institute in his capacity with the Sarasota Scullers.

Wood filed last year for the District 5 seat on the Sarasota County School Board, Supervisor of Elections Office records note.

Tim Enos, former chief of the Sarasota County Schools Police Department, won that seat during the Aug. 23, 2022 Primary Election.

Wood and two other candidates in that race ended up withdrawing before the primary, the Supervisor of Elections Office’s records show. However, Wood did end up raising $7,660 in campaign contributions.
