The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 5050 Central Sarasota Parkway, which is within Saratoga Place at Palmer Ranch, the Sheriff’s Office announced late that afternoon.

At 8:53 a.m. on Nov. 4, “the Emergency Operations Bureau received a 911 notification from a caller threatening to harm himself,” a news release said. “Members of the Patrol Bureau were dispatched, and the first deputy arrived at 9:05 a.m. The deputy contacted the subject,” who was armed with a kitchen knife outside the residence, the release added.

In response to a Sarasota News Leader request the afternoon of Nov. 5, Matthew Binkley, manager of the Community Affairs Division of the Sheriff’s Office, identified the subject as 70-year-old Robert Glenn Goolsby.

“The deputy gave multiple verbal commands” to Goolsby to drop the weapon, the release continued, but Goolsby “did not comply” and, instead, “pointed the knife at the deputy, and advanced toward the deputy. The deputy had no option but to respond with deadly force to protect himself,” the release said.

Responding deputies rendered aid to Goolsby until Sarasota County Fire Department personnel arrived, the release added. Goolsby was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, “where he is being treated for his injuries,” the release noted.

“No SCSO member was injured during this incident,” the release pointed out.

Binkley of Community Affairs also told the News Leader that a formal report on the incident was not available as of midafternoon on Nov. 5.

The records maintained by the Office of the Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller show that Goolsby formally has been charged with aggravated assault on specified personnel with intent to kill. Goolsby’s arraignment has been scheduled for Dec. 5.

In the meantime, he is in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office, without bond, as noted in a document that Diana Moreland, chief judge of the 12th Judicial District Court, signed on Nov. 5.

The News Leader found no past charges against Goolsby when it searched the Circuit Court’s records.
