Firefighters/paramedics on duty at Sarasota County Fire Station 13 on Siesta Key responded shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11, to reports of an overturned Hobie Cat catamaran in the Gulf, The Sarasota News Leader learned.

Ultimately, a county lifeguard was able to reach the boater by jet ski and assist him with righting the vessel, the resulting Fire Department report explained. Members of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, using one of that agency’s Marine Patrol vessels, also were on the scene to help the boater, the report said.

No medical aid was needed, the report added.

The alarm about the incident officially went out at 2:11 p.m., the report noted. Station 13’s EMS unit arrived at the beach at 2:15 p.m.; it cleared the scene at 2:32 p.m., the report added.

No Mote Marine Laboratory Beach Conditions report was available for Siesta Key on Jan. 11, but for Lido Beach — which Big Sarasota Pass separates from Siesta Key — the report for that day said the wind speed at 4:08 p.m. was just shy of 2 mph, with the wind out of the north-northeast. The air temperature was listed as 69.04 degrees, while the water surface temperature was put at 66 degrees. Surf height was noted as 1 to 2 feet, and the surf intensity was described as “moderate.”

Like Siesta Beach, Lido fronts on the Gulf.
