“The Refurb Project of the Sarasota Technology Users Group (STUG) has reached a major milestone, surpassing 25,000 refurbished computers donated to individuals and organizations in need throughout the region,” the organization has announced.

“The STUG Refurb Project is a volunteer-driven initiative dedicated to providing fully refurbished computers at no cost” to residents of Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties, it adds. “These computers are distributed directly to individuals as well as through schools and community partners, including Goodwill and The Patterson Foundation,” the release explains.

“To support this mission,” the release continues, “the project collects used computers from local governments, businesses, and private individuals. Goodwill and The Patterson Foundation also assist in gathering donated equipment. Every device received is securely wiped to protect donor information before being refurbished,” it points out.

“A key component of the program’s success is the generous support of Microsoft Corporation, which donates Windows 11 and Microsoft Office Suite licenses for each refurbished computer,” the release notes. “This contribution ensures that every system is fully equipped and ready for use by its new owner,” the release says.

“Reaching the 25,000-unit milestone highlights the dedication of STUG’s volunteers and the ongoing need for accessible technology in the community,” it continues. “The Refurb Project remains committed to bridging the digital divide and empowering individuals through reliable, modern computing resources at no cost to the individual.”
