A bike rodeo at Shamrock Park and Nature Center will kick off the summer reading program at the Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Public Library in Venice, Sarasota County’s Libraries and Historical Resources Department staff has announced.

“Bring your bike and helmet, or borrow one of ours, to test your skills with an obstacle course, learn basic maintenance, participate in a turtle race, walk through the nature center, and more!” a county news release says.

This event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, at Shamrock Park, the release continues. Registration will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. that day, the release adds, noting that the rodeo is recommended for children ages 12 or younger who can ride a bicycle.

Members of the Sarasota-Manatee Bike Club and Friends of the Legacy Trail will be on hand to teach bike skills and maintenance, and assist with helmet fittings, the release says. “A limited number of free helmets will be given away by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and the Sarasota-Manatee Bike Club,” the release points out.

Lunch will be provided courtesy of All Faiths Food Bank and the Sarasota County Schools, the release adds.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian, the release points out.

County staff recommends that participants wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sun protection.

Shamrock Park and Nature Center is located at 3900 Shamrock Drive in Venice. Participants are being asked to park in the area between the basketball courts and the nature center. Registration will be near the basketball courts.
