Gulf Coast Games for Life to be held in February

Registration is open for the 2018 Gulf Coast Games for Life, which will take place Feb. 10-17 at venues throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties, Sarasota County has announced.

Formerly known as the Gulf Coast Senior Games, the 2018 Gulf Coast Games for Life events are open to amateur athletes age 50 and older as of Dec. 1, 2018, a news release explains. Registration will end Jan. 26 for the 29th annual event, which is sponsored by the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department and the Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department, the release points out.

The registration fee is $12; each event costs an additional $3, the release explains. Events such as bowling, golf and tennis necessitate extra facility fees, the release says.

Every participant will receive an event T-shirt, the release adds.

The age divisions are 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; 85-89 and 90+.

The 2018 Gulf Coast Games for Life is one of the qualifiers for the Florida Senior Games State Competition, which will be held Dec. 1-9 in Clearwater, the release adds.

Medals are awarded in the Gulf Coast Games for Life to the top three athletes in each event, for each age category, the release says. The top five athletes in each age category qualify to compete in the Florida Senior Games State Competition.
