Parents looking for healthful activities for their children this summer will find one answer in the form of Kids’ Summer Beach Runs, presented by the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department, and New Balance Sarasota, the county has announced.

The Kids’ Summer Beach Runs will be offered every week beginning Tuesday, June 7, at Siesta Beach, located at 948 Beach Road on Siesta Key; and Wednesday, June 8, at Brohard Beach, located at 1600 Harbor Drive in Venice, a news release says

At Siesta Beach, registration will be at the picnic pavilion near the playground; in Venice, it will be near Fins at Sharky’s, the release adds.

Registration in both places will begin at 5:30 p.m. The 1-mile runs will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

The Siesta Beach Run will continue on Tuesdays; the Venice Beach Run will remain on Wednesdays.

A one-time registration fee of $1 enables children to participate in as many beach runs as they want, the release points out.

Youngsters also are encouraged to dress up to match the theme of each run and earn a prize, the release notes. Themed photo opportunities will be offered each week, as follows:

  • June 7, 8: Team Spirit.
  • June 14, 15: Tortoise and the Hare.
  • June  21, 22: Shiver Me Timbers.
  • June 28, 29: Shark Week.
  • July 5, 6: Red, White and Race.
  • July 12, 13: Comic Book Hero.
  • July 19, 20: Tropical Tide.
  • July 26, 27: Christmas in July.
  • Aug. 2, 3: Buckaroo Round-Up.
  • Aug. 9, 10: ’60s Beach Bash.

Children who complete four runs receive a free event T-shirt and a 50-percent-off voucher for a pair of New Balance Kids shoes, the release says. The runs may be completed either on Siesta Key or on Brohard Beach. All runners will receive a ribbon and a free ice-pop each time they participate, the release adds.
