Letters to the Editor: An open letter to Rep. Vern Buchanan, Rep. Greg Steube, Sen. Rick Scott and Sen. Ashley Moody

Since the first attacks on alleged drug-running boats in international waters, public anger and distrust have intensified. American military strikes have now killed more than 80 human beings who have not been legally confirmed as combatants or drug runners (all while the President pardons actual drug runners). Though the administration has termed the boat strikes a “war on drugs,” our Constitution grants only Congress the power to declare war. Since Congress — you — have not declared war, these strikes are criminal, subject to U.S. and international prosecution.

Following is a list of some of the many illegal and/or immoral actions the President has engaged in:

  • Raids by ICE without judicial warrants.
  • Denial of election results and pardoning the convicted Jan. 6 mob.
  • Withholding legislatively approved funds.
  • Unauthorized access to sensitive citizen data by DOGE.
  • Misuse of authority, including improper use of AI to slash programs without legal review.
  • Using public office for private gain, including business deals and receipt of gifts.
  • Illegal control of the news media and incursions on First Amendment rights.
  • Deploying National Guard troops in American cities without justification.
  • Imposing tariffs by overreaching into Congress’s role to use the IEPA.
  • Targeting political adversaries, ending birthright citizenship, and suspending student visas.

As our elected representatives, you swore an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Our Constitution is now threatened by a domestic enemy — the President. Please serve your role to balance the power of the Executive Branch.

Stop a president from acting illegally and immorally for his own gain and that of his billionaire supporters. Stop a president who is harming our environment, our health, our well-being and our future. Honor the law. Impeach, convict and remove this man who has betrayed his oath of office.

To our Congressional representatives: We want you to confirm that you have read our letter and are aware of the illegal acts that your inaction condones. We challenge you to confirm this by sending us a letter giving the statutes and case law that allow any of the bulleted illegal actions above.

We are Sarasota community-involved women who are willing to stand up for human rights and the rule of law against a president who disrespects women and the Constitution he swore to uphold.

Respectfully submitted,
