New K-9 unit member joins Sarasota Police Department

German shepherd turned 2 on Feb. 8

The Sarasota Police Department has welcomed a new K-9, the agency announced on Feb. 8.

The handler, Officer Paul Gagnon, and K-9 Kodak have completed 640 hours of initial training, a news release notes. That included “patrol work, tracking, building searches, area searches, article searches, and apprehension,” the release adds.

K-9 Kodak turned 2 on Feb. 8, the release points out. A German shepherd, he was born in the Czech Republic in 2021.

“Gagnon joined the Sarasota Police Department K-9 Unit in 2021 and is certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) as a K-9 handler,” the release notes.

“K-9 Kodak enjoys taking long walks on the beach and tracking bad guys at work,” the release continues. He also “enjoys playing ball and chewing on things that should not be chewed on when he’s off duty,” the release says.

The Sarasota Police Department has four dogs and four handlers, the release adds.
