Investigation underway into Sept. 12 shooting in Newtown

Sarasota Police Department personnel are investigating a shooting that occurred just before 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, in the 2400 block of Watts Way, the department has announced.

The victim, an adult male driver, was found near the intersection of First Street and Central Avenue, a news release said. He was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries, it added.

Three individuals who were in custody were being interviewed by officers, the release noted.

The location, as shown on a map, is close to the Janies Garden residential complex in Newtown.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the release stressed.

In response to a Sarasota News Leader inquiry on Sept. 17, Genevieve Judge, supervisor of the Police Department’s Public Information Office, reported, “I checked with our Criminal Investigations Division and at this time, there is nothing new to share in that investigation.”
