Sarasota County History Center to relocate temporarily to Osprey Library

Facility at 6062 Porter Way to close permanently after April 12

The Sarasota County History Center will move to a temporary location while a new home for the History Center is planned and constructed, county staff announced this week.

The History Center’s current location — 6062 Porter Way in Sarasota — will be permanently closed after April 12, a news release points out. The History Center will resume adjusted public services on Monday, May 1, at the Osprey Public Library, which stands at 337 N. Tamiami Trail, the release adds. History Center services will not be available from April 13 through April 30.

The History Center’s range of public services will not be limited while it operates out of the Osprey Library, the release says. However, appointments and advance notice will be required for accessing some collection materials.

While some of the History Center’s most commonly used reference materials will be kept at its new Osprey Library location, the release continues, “many historical photographs, films, oral histories, archival records, maps, and other resources will be stored in a more secure, environmentally appropriate facility approximately 10 miles away,” the release adds. “Staff will have complete access to the collection but will need advance notice to retrieve items requested by researchers,” the release points out.

Starting May 1, complete details will be available on the History Center’s webpage at scgov.net/history.

A portion of the History Center’s historical photographs and documents also can be accessed online at scgov.pastperfectonline.com, the release notes.
