After breaking its passenger count record in 2021, the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) has begun 2022 by setting yet another record, the airport has announced.

In January, 302,189 passengers traveled through the airport, compared to 126,704 passengers in January 2021, a news release says. “This is an increase of 138% and is the highest number of passengers for the month of January in the history of SRQ,” the release added.

“We continue to be pleasantly surprised by the number of passengers who choose SRQ, especially last month, with the many weather-related cancellations,” Rick Piccolo, president and CEO of the airport, said in the release. “In January, we had 282 flights cancelled, primarily due to the multiple cold fronts moving across the United States,” Piccolo continued. “Flight schedules are returning to normal as we prepare for our peak months of March and April,” he pointed out.

“Record-breaking growth is expected to continue as airlines add new destinations,” the release notes. “Allegiant Air will begin new nonstop service to Akron-Canton, Ohio on March 3 and to Appleton, Wis., on March 11, the release says.
