On Saturday, Nov. 15, the second deputy-involved shooting in almost two weeks involving the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the death of the suspect, the agency has reported.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 15, deputies responded to a report of a suicide attempt in the 6200 block of Cardigan Circle, the agency reported. “Upon arrival, at approximately 12:39 a.m., deputies encountered a male suspect armed with a handgun,” a news release added.

“No deputies were injured during the confrontation,” the release pointed out.

After the shooting, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene, the release said. The Sheriff’s Office Deputy-Involved Shooting Team responded to the site, to conduct “a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the release added.

The Sheriff’s Office “is committed to transparency and will provide updates as more information becomes available,” the report said.

A Sarasota News Leader online search found that Cardigan Circle is within Camelot East Village, which is a manufactured home community just north of Clark Road.

In response to a News Leader request on Nov. 19 for any update in the case, Matthew Binkley, manager of the Sheriff’s Office’s Community Affairs Division, wrote in an email, “The deputy involved is on paid administrative leave per policy and the Criminal Investigations Section Deputy Involved Shooting team is continuing to investigate.”

The prior deputy-involved shooting occurred on Nov. 4 at Saratoga Place on Palmer Ranch. (See the related article in this issue.)
