Victim sustained ‘non-life-threatening injuries,’ Police Department says

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on Sunday, Oct. 27, near the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Gillespie Avenue, the agency reported.
At approximately 1 a.m. that day, a news release said, “officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area.”
“One individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital,” the release added. “Details are limited at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.”

The Police Department had not released any update on this case prior to the deadline for this issue of The Sarasota News Leader.
By count of the News Leader, this was the 14th shooting in the Newtown community of north Sarasota since Jan. 1. Prior to this incident, the most recent one was reported on Sept. 22. That resulted in the death of a 56-year-old man. Jeremy Maurice Shannon, 42, of 2514 Mango Ave. in Sarasota, was charged in connection with that homicide.
Before that incident occurred, the last shooting in Newtown that had resulted in a death occurred on May 16.
