29-year-old Sarasota man charged with DUI Manslaughter and other counts following crash into Courtland Street garage

One woman killed while five more injured, Sarasota Police Department reports

The Sarasota Police Department (SPD) has charged a 29-year-old Sarasota man with multiple counts, including DUI Manslaughter, in the aftermath of a fatal traffic crash that occurred just before 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, the department has reported.

Jorge Luis Williams Denis of 3150 Courtland St. in Sarasota also has been charged with Vehicular Homicide and No Valid Driver’s License Resulting in Death, plus three separate counts of No Valid Driver’s License with Serious Injury, a news release notes.

He was arrested on Oct. 8. As of Oct. 10, he remained in the Sarasota County Jail under total bond of $106,000, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office’s Corrections Division record showed.

His arraignment has been set for Dec. 2, the Corrections Division record said.

On Oct. 7, the Police Department news release explains, officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of Courtland Street after receiving a report of a vehicle crashing into a garage. When they arrived, the release continues, “several witnesses said there were six women who were inside the garage during the crash.”

One woman died at the scene, the release adds, while three others were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with injuries. Two other women sustained minor injuries, the release notes.

The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit, Criminalistics Unit and Victim Advocate responded to the scene, the release adds.

It is unknown whether “drugs or speed played a factor in the crash,” the release says. “The crash is under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit.”

In a search of the records of the Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court, The Sarasota News Leader found no prior offenses for Denis.

Courtland Street is located between South Tuttle Avenue and South Lockwood Ridge Road. It is north of Bahia Vista Street.
