Bicycle helmet giveaway and fitting program for children and youth postponed at Osprey Junction Trailhead

‘Administrative issues’ cited as reason for decision about April 15 event

A bicycle helmet giveaway and fitting for children and youth up to age 18 that was planned for April 15 at the Osprey Junction Trailhead has been postponed, the Friends of the Osprey Junction Trailhead has announced.

“I’m sorry for any inconvenience,” Ralph Monti, director of the nonprofit’s bicycle programs, wrote in a March 28 email, “but I was informed that this event … must be postponed due to administrative issues.”

Section 316.2065(3)(d) of the Florida Statutes says, “A bicycle rider or passenger who is under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted and is fastened securely upon the passenger’s head by a strap and that meets the federal safety standard for bicycle helmets … As used in this subsection, the term ‘passenger’ includes a child who is riding in a trailer or semitrailer attached to a bicycle.”

Members of the Friends of the Osprey Junction Trailhead have provided helmet giveaways and fittings in years past.

The Osprey Junction Trailhead Park is located at 939 E. Bay St. in Osprey.

Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead is a chapter of Friends of Sarasota County Parks, which is also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in Florida, the earlier news release explained. The mission of the Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead is to support, promote and enhance the Osprey Junction Trailhead, which is a Sarasota County Park adjacent to The Legacy Trail.
