The Sarasota in Defense of Animals sanctuary “was hit hard by Hurricane Irma,” the nonprofit announced this week. “Trees down, flooding, barns and fences destroyed!” a news release says.

As a result Sarasota in Defense of Animals (SDA) has started a GoFundMe account to help it restore its facilities to the pre-storm level.

“We are working hard to get back on track so that the animals can continue to live the rest of their lives in a beautiful and cruelty free paradise,” the release points out. “We spend a lot of time and energy working on animal protection issues but still have the responsibility of running our sanctuary on a daily basis,” the release continues. “The expenses to care for all of the rescued animals exceed $350 per day. With the cost of repairing the hurricane damage we will need additional funding.”

The nonprofit, which was founded in 1989, has set a goal of $5,000, based on the GoFundMe site.
