County’s OnDemand transit service logs 500,000 rides since its launch two years ago

Service being rebranded as Breeze OnDemand

Two years since launching its curb-to-curb ride-sharing service, Sarasota County’s Transit Department has reached a major milestone, staff has announced: providing 500,000 “OnDemand” rides.

“The news comes amid the transit system’s transition to the Breeze brand,” a news release points out. OnDemand by Sarasota County has been rebranded Breeze OnDemand, the release adds.

“The launch of the Breeze OnDemand service was part of our efforts to create a more appealing public transit system,” Transit Director Jane Grogg said in the release. “The first year of OnDemand service yielded 180,000 rides. The number of rides delivered in the second year increased by more than 50%,” Grogg added in the release. “The growth and popularity of the OnDemand service is a testament to our efforts to align the transit system with community values.”

The following are the four Breeze OnDemand service zones:

  • Downtown Sarasota/Lido Key/Longboat Key.
  • Siesta Key.
  • Venice/Englewood area.
  • North Port area.

Rides cost $2 per person and must start and stop within the same service zone, the release notes. A $1.50 Breeze OnDemand rate is charged “for Transportation Disadvantaged riders (certified through the Breeze Transit office),” the release does point out.

OnDemand hours are Monday through Saturday, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., the release continues. “The Breeze OnDemand system connects to the Breeze fixed route service, creating a countywide mobility network,” it adds.
