No foul play suspected
The Sarasota Police Department is conducting a death investigation following the apparent drowning of a man during the evening of Monday, Aug. 24, the agency has announced.
“Detectives do not believe foul play was involved,” a news release said.
“Sarasota Police officers responded to the 400 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive” just after 6 p.m., the release continued. “The man was pulled to shore by bystanders and pronounced dead by Sarasota County Emergency Services personnel,” it noted.
Benjamin Franklin Drive is the primary access to Lido Key Beach, which is located within the city of Sarasota.
On Aug. 25, The Sarasota News Leader did request a copy of the formal report on the incident. However, given the early stage of the investigation, almost all of the report was redacted. Nonetheless, that report does say that 911 Dispatch was notified that someone was performing CPR on the victim, while awaiting the EMS unit.
The National Weather Service station located at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport reported that, at 6:05 p.m. on Aug. 24, the wind was recorded at 10 mph out of the southwest. The heat index was put at 98 degrees, incorporating relative humidity of 66% with the temperature of 88 degrees. The skies were clear, it further noted.
