Incident follows officers’ response to report of suspicious person on Devonshire Lane in Sarasota

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the death of a white male, age 50, that occurred while Sarasota Police officers were taking him into protective custody, the Police Department has reported.

The death occurred after officers responded to a report of a suspicious person shortly before 4 a.m. on Sunday, the agency said in a news release. That call involved a location in the 1600 block of Devonshire Lane in Sarasota, the release explained.

An FDLE investigation of an in-custody death is standard protocol, the release added.

Devonshire Lane is just east of South Orange Avenue and south of Oak Street in Laurel Park. The 1600 block begins near the intersection of Rawls Avenue, a map shows. It is
