At 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, the Fruitville Library officially will reopen to the public, following renovations that have taken place over the past months.

“The library has been updated with new paint and furnishings, as well as additional spaces for reading, studying and collaboration,” a Sarasota County Government news release says.

Once again, the release notes, “visitors will have access to regular services, including computers, printing, study areas, collaboration rooms, a meeting room, programming and the children’s area,” as well as “access to the full Fruitville Library collection, including books, DVDs and assistive devices.”

A county webpage points out that the library will resume its regular hours, which are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The facility — like the county’s other libraries — will be closed on Sundays.

The county’s website also notes that, for more than 20 years, the Fruitville Library “has been one of the busiest branches in the Sarasota County Library System.” The renovations were needed, a separate webpage said, to “better serve its growing community.”

“Fruitville Library is a well-used community space, and we know how much our patrons have been looking forward to coming back inside,” said Renée Di Pilato, director of the Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources Department in the news release. “Reopening the library gives the community the opportunity to begin enjoying the renovated space while we continue working toward the next phase of this project.”

The release explains, “Construction will continue on future library spaces, including a Creation Station, a dedicated Teen Room, a larger meeting room with enhanced technology and a new courtyard and garden area.” Those spaces will open at a later date, the release points out.

Work also will continue on the new History Center adjacent to the library, the release says, noting, “Library visitors may occasionally hear construction noise during this work.

When the library closed on Dec. 18, 2025, county staff reported at that time that it anticipated the library project would be completed this summer. While the facility was closed, a potable library located in the parking lot allowed patrons to continue borrowing materials and picking up items on hold.

Sweet Sparkman Architects of Sarasota began the design of the renovated library and the new History Center in 2023, a county Capital Projects Department fact sheet says. Tandem Construction of Sarasota has handled the construction at an expense of $26,035,162, that fact sheet adds.

The Capital Projects update for the Library and History Center initiative that was released at the start of this month noted, “The Fruitville Library is advancing,” with shelves and books being moved into the structure, along with the “completion of building and life safety final inspections.”

Work on the History Center is expected to continue into the winter, the fact sheet pointed out.
