Newton H. Whidden

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to seek public assistance in locating an 85-year-old man whose last known contact with friends or relatives was about 10 p.m. Aug. 20.

Newton Humprey Whidden spoke with a friend by phone that night, but Whidden’s phone later was found at the Siesta Key Pharmacy, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Whidden is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. He has gray hair and hazel eyes, and he may be wearing a long-sleeved plaid shirt and brown or gold pants.

His last known location was the 4800 block of 10th Street in Sarasota. He reportedly could be planning to visit a cemetery near Horse Creek in DeSoto County.

Whidden drives a white 2000 Dodge Caravan Tiara with a Florida tag, A183XI, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

A Silver Alert has been issued for Whidden, the report adds.

Anyone with any information about Whidden is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible by calling 911 or by calling 941-316-1201.
