20-year-old man hospitalized
At 7:40 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting in the 3400 block of Coronado Drive in Sarasota, the office announced that evening.
“The scene is secure and there is no threat to the community at this time,” a news alert said.
The following morning, the agency’s community affairs director, Kaitlyn R. Perez reported, “The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to conduct an investigation following a shooting that occurred Monday evening in Sarasota.”
Perez explained that the call seeking law enforcement help regarded “an individual lying in the road with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries,” she added; the person was in intensive care as of her writing on Feb. 22.
“Witnesses reported hearing a single ‘pop’ described as fireworks,” Perez continued. “No one was immediately taken into custody. The investigation is very active and ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the agency’s Criminal Investigations Section,” she added, which may be reached by calling 941-861-4900.
The family of the victim in this case “has opted into privacy rights afforded by Marsy’s Law,” Perez pointed out. For that reason, she explained, no details about the victim would be released, other than the fact that he is a 20-year-old male.
Coronado Drive is south of Proctor Road and west of South Beneva Road, in the vicinity of Red Bug Slough.
Additional updates would be provided as they became available, Perez noted.
