Siesta Key Condominium Council discontinues Holiday Lighting Contest it conducted for years

Erosion in participation prompted decision

The Siesta Key Condominium Council (SKCC) has announced that it no longer will sponsor a Holiday Lighting Contest for its members.

The Nov. 9 email pointed out that the organization, “for as long as can be remembered,” has conducted the event. However, over recent years, the email continued, the Council leaders have seen a “steady erosion” of participation.

Therefore, the Nov. 9 email said, after reviewing the program, the Council’s board members “decided the time has come to drop this annual activity.”

Nonetheless, the email added, “Condominium Associations are urged to continue to decorate in the interest of support of our iconic Siesta Key as well as for the pleasure of your Association owners.”

Honors were accorded to the winners in three categories that reflected the varying sizes of the island’s complexes.

Condominium associations had to be current members of the organization to participate in the contest. The Council represents about 90 of those organizations on the Key, with approximately 7,000 households, its leaders have pointed out.

The email concluded, “Thanks for your past involvement and hope you will continue to support the Siesta Key Community.”
