April 29 shooting on Gillespie Avenue in Sarasota under investigation by Police Department

Adult sustains non-life-threatening injuries

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place near the 2700 block of Gillespie Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, April 29, the agency has announced.

“An adult victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the incident,” a news release points out.

“This incident appears isolated,” the release adds, with “no immediate danger to the public.”

The affected section of Gillespie Avenue appears to have mostly single-family homes, as shown on an aerial map that The Sarasota News Leader reviewed. The block is just east of North Links Avenue, with U.S. 301/Washington Boulevard farther to the east. Gillespie Avenue is perpendicular to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

By count of the News Leader, this is the fourth violent incident reported in the Newtown community of Sarasota since early February. Prior to this, on March 26, both a shooting and a stabbing occurred near the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, which stands between Myrtle Street to the north and John Rivers Street to the south.

“As always,” the Police Department release says in regard to this latest incident, “we appreciate any tips from the public that may help identify the suspect.
