Extensive improvements along U.S. 41 through downtown Sarasota were scheduled finally to get underway as of Nov. 8, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced. The project will stretch from Browning Street to 11th Street in Sarasota and will include resurfacing the road; installing updated lighting; constructing sidewalks, curbs and gutters; improving drainage; and modifications of some lanes to foster better traffic flow during the peak tourist season, Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin announced in his weekly newsletter, published on Nov. 4.

FDOT has advised city staff that nighttime and overnight lane closures will be necessary along U.S. 41, U.S. 301, Fruitville Road and Orange Avenue, Barwin noted. For more details on lane closures and times, click here.

This is a $6.2-million investment in Sarasota, Barwin pointed out. “While much of the construction work is scheduled to be done during non-peak drive times, we encourage everyone to be patient when encountering lane closures,” he added.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2017.
