36-year-old motorcyclist dies after crash at intersection of U.S. 41 and 14th Street in Sarasota

Cause of incident under Police Department investigation

The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal crash that happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, the agency has reported.

Officers responded to the scene of a single-vehicle incident near the intersection of 14th Street and North Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41), Genevieve Judge, the department’s public information officer, pointed out in a news release.

The 36-year-old male driver of a motorcycle, who is a Sarasota resident, was traveling northbound on U.S. 41 when, “for unknown reasons,” he lost control and crashed near the above intersection, Judge added. He died as a result of the injuries he suffered, she wrote.

The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit and Criminalistics Unit responded to the scene, Judge noted. The intersection of 14th Street and U.S. 41 “was closed for several hours for the investigation,” she continued.

As of early afternoon on Aug. 23, she pointed out, officers did not know “whether drugs, alcohol, or speed played a factor in the crash. The crash is under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit.”
