The Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department (PRNR) will host its third annual World Ocean Day celebration from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at North Jetty Park in Nokomis, the department has announced.

This free, family-friendly event will feature “interactive exhibits, educational presentations, hands-on activities, vendors and food trucks,” a news release says.

North Jetty Park stands at 1000 S. Casey Key Road.

Participants also will be able to join a beach cleanup effort beginning at 8 a.m., “with hourly educational lectures starting at 8:30 a.m. No registration is required,” the release points out.

The event will highlight “the vital role oceans play in our ecosystem” and encourage stewardship to help keep local waters healthy, the release explains.

“Held in alignment with World Ocean Day, an international initiative,” the event will be part of a global effort that includes more than “2,000 organizations in 180 countries working to promote healthy oceans and ecosystems,” the release points out.

“Every piece of trash removed from our beaches makes a difference,” said PRNR Events and Programming Supervisor Destiny Gonzalez in the release. “We hope this event encourages people to get outside, stay active and be part of a larger global movement to protect our oceans and beaches,” Gonzalez added.
