Approximately 10,000 gallons of effluent recovered by City of Venice crew

On Wednesday, March 5, a blockage in a City of Venice sewer line resulted in about 2,500 gallons of raw sewage overflowing from a manhole located on the east side of the Revello Apartments complex, which stands at 101 Mirano Way in Nokomis, city staff reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
The address of the manhole is 118 Bella Verde Blvd. the report points out. The manhole is part of a private sewer system, the report adds.
Workers vacuumed out the gravity sewer system and two stormwater catch basins, the FDEP report says, with approximately 10,000 gallons recovered from both. Of that effluent, the report notes, about 500 gallons was untreated sewage.
Although the cause of the blockage remained unknown when the report was issued on March 7, a significant amount of sand “was found in the sewer lines and vacuumed,” the report continues.
City staff learned of the overflowing manhole about 9:30 a.m. on March 5, the report says; it took workers until 11:08 a.m. to address the problems.
No water bodies were affected, the report adds.
“The area was washed and lime was applied,” the report notes.
TwinPlumbing.com explains that lime will help sewage break down quickly and alleviate the odor problem. Lime is used to disinfect the area, as it kills the harmful bacteria present in the sewage.
