In recognition of Arbor Day, the public is invited to join staff of the City of Sarasota’s Parks & Recreation Department from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 24, at Arlington Park & Aquatic Complex for a celebratory tree planting, city staff has announced.

The park is located at 2650 Waldemere St. in Sarasota.

“A ‘Florida Flame’ red maple tree, one of Florida’s native maple species, will be planted in the southern part of Arlington Park, near Hyde Park Street,” a news release says. “This seasonally color-changing tree will add to and complement the already vibrant ecosystem in the popular community park,” the release adds.

During this event, the city’s Arbor Day proclamation will be read by a representative of the Florida Forest Service, with the ceremonial tree planting “and a brief question-and-answer session” to follow, the release notes.

Attendees also will “have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning through an educational activity,” the release points out.

“As a 40-year Tree City USA community, the City of Sarasota is committed to encouraging residents to plant, properly care for, and appreciate trees,” the release says.

“In addition to cleaning air and stormwater,” the release adds, trees beautify city neighborhoods, “provide shelter for wildlife, help conserve energy, combat the urban heat island effect, and much more.”
