Beginning July 6, City of Sarasota residents will be able to register to participate in the Neighborhood Canopy Program, city staff has announced.

“This program provides professional installation of a mature, 2-inch caliper tree between the front plane of a resident’s home and the street,” a news release explains. A participant will pay $100 for the tree, with the city covering the remainder of the cost up to $500, the release adds.

The money for the Neighborhood Canopy Program comes out of the city’s Tree Mitigation Fund, which collects a portion of tree-removal permit dollars to be used for initiatives such as this one, the release points out.

Neighborhood Canopy Program participants may choose from 10 species, the release says: green buttonwood, gumbo-limbo, live oak, D.D. Blanchard magnolia, redbay, royal poinciana, shady lady black olive, Southern red cedar, sycamore or winged elm.

Registration will end on Monday, Aug. 17, with tree planting scheduled to take place between Aug. 31 and Sept. 21, the release notes. “Participation is limited to City of Sarasota residents,” the release stresses.

“Planting trees does more than just beautify neighborhoods,” the release says. “Growing the urban canopy can help fight the urban heat island effect, save energy, clean the air, filter storm runoff, and provide habitat for local wildlife,” it adds.
