City staff emphasizes that storm debris pickups ended in December

A Feb. 20 City of Sarasota announcement urged residents to follow the solid waste collection rules that are in place.
“Following extensive storm debris collection efforts,” a news release said, the City of Sarasota’s solid waste collection returned to regular operations in December 2024.
“Residential yard waste should be placed in cans, paper bags, or bundles weighing less than 50 pounds,” the release pointed out. Bundles should not exceed 48 inches in length, it added.
Moreover, the release stressed, “Yard waste that is not properly prepared will not be collected but can be prepared for the following week’s collection or picked up via special pickup.”
City staff also noted that bulk waste — such as couches, tables, mattresses, appliances or other items too large to fit in a city garbage cart — “can be placed at the curb for regular collection.” However, the release added, bulk waste exceeding 1 cubic yard (3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet, “or roughly the size of a residential washer or dryer”) will necessitate a special pickup.
“All items must be placed at the right of way no later than 7 a.m. on residents’ assigned collection day,” the release pointed out, as well. “City-issued carts must have their lids in the closed position” for the garbage to be collected, the release said. Solid waste carts and other items “should not be placed under trees, in the roadway, or less than 6 feet from any obstructions,” to allow collection equipment to maneuver, the release further explained.
