City administrative offices and some facilities to be closed on June 19

City of Sarasota administrative offices will be closed Friday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth national holiday, the city has announced.
However, the arbage/recycling and yard waste collection schedules will not be affected by the holiday, a news release stresses.
Holiday hours of operation at City of Sarasota facilities will vary, as follows:
- Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex, located at 2650 Waldemere St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Lido Pool, located at 400 Benjamin Franklin Drive, will be closed.
- Payne Park Tennis Center, located at 2050 Adams Lane, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, located at 1845 34th St., will be open from 6 to 10 a.m.
- The box office of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, located at 777 N. Tamiami Trail, will be closed.
On Saturday, June 20, a Juneteenth celebration, co-sponsored by the City of Sarasota, will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way between North Links Avenue and Pershing Avenue, the news release notes. “This free, family-friendly event will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, and activities,” it adds.
For more information, contact the event organizer, Gwendalyn Fleetwood, at 941-536-6906, the release notes.
As part of the Juneteenth celebration, city staff will give away 75 trees to City of Sarasota residents, the release continues. The species of trees being offered are as follows: avocado, loquat, mango, red maple and red mulberry.
“City arborists will be on site to provide guidance on selection and care,” the release notes. The trees will be available from 1 to 6 p.m. at the intersection of North Links Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, it adds.
“To qualify for a tree, valid identification or a utility bill showing City of Sarasota residency must be provided,” the release explains. “Qualifying homeowners associations, condominium associations and apartment complexes” will be allowed one tree only for a common area, with documentation verifying authorization from the association or property management company, the release points out.
The trees for this event were paid for by the city’s “Tree Mitigation Fund, which collects a portion of tree removal permit dollars to be used for urban canopy programs,” the release says.
