Their colleagues on the Sarasota County Commission have elected Commissioner Nancy Detert of District 3 the chair and Commissioner Charles Hines of District 5 the vice chair for the 2018 calendar year.

The unanimous votes came during the board’s annual retreat, which was held on Dec. 8 at Phillippi Estate Park. Commissioners indicated they wanted Hines to have another opportunity for leadership on the board before term limits necessitate his stepping down in 2020.

Commissioner Michael Moran of District 1 will serve as pro tem.

Chair Paul Caragiulo will continue serving in that role for the remainder of 2017. Detert serves as vice chair. Traditionally, the board members elevate their vice chair to chair.

A Venice resident, Detert was elected to the commission in 2016. She served in the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate from 1998 to 2016.

Detert is a past member of the Sarasota County School Board, and she has served on the Enterprise Florida Board of Directors, the Florida Commission on Tourism and the Department of Education’s Commission on Leadership for High Needs Districts, a news release notes.

She has been a Florida resident since 1978, the release adds.

Detert is related to Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the release points out. She has three children: Mark, Bryan and Jamie.
