County staff marking importance of land in region’s agricultural heritage

At noon on Friday, April 17, the staff of Sarasota County’s Historical Resources Division will host a ceremony at Gulf Gate Library in Sarasota to unveil a new historical marker commemorating the former site of Hyde Park Groves.
The designation will mark “the culmination of a rigorous, multi-year process involving extensive historical research,” a news release notes. “Although the marker received official approval more than a year ago, additional time was required for the detailed design and fabrication of the forged cast aluminum structure,” the release adds.
The newly installed marker will recognize Hyde Park Groves — “once one of the most significant citrus operations in Florida” — which is “located in what is now the Forest Lakes community,” the release points out. Formerly owned by the Palmer family, the groves “played an important role in the region’s agricultural heritage,” the release explains.
Gulf Gate Library stands at 7112 Curtiss Ave. in Sarasota, near Palmer Ranch.
“This marker serves as a lasting tribute to the area’s rich history and its contribution to Sarasota County’s development,” organizers of the event said, as referenced in the release. “It stands as a reminder of the land’s importance in shaping the community we know today.”
County leaders “and local dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled during the workday to accommodate official participation,” the release points out. “Members of the public are encouraged to attend the unveiling,” it adds.
“Sarasota County is home to more than 100 historical markers, each constructed of cast aluminum and mounted on durable posts,” the release continues. “These markers highlight sites of cultural, historical, and architectural significance throughout the region.”
