Seven Sarasota County students honored at School Board meeting
Seven Sarasota County high school students have been awarded prizes for their 2D artwork, essays and a video expressing the League of Women Voters’ 2024 theme Your Vote is Your Voice, the League’s Sarasota County chapter has announced.
The competition marked the third year of the League’s YVote initiative.
Jill Lewis-Spector, first vice president of the League of Women Voters of Florida and the Education Action Team leader for the Sarasota County League chapter, presented the awards on Dec. 10 at the Sarasota County School Board meeting, a news release says.
First-place winners received $500; those honored for second place received $300; and third-place winner received $200, the release notes.
Video winner
- First place — Layla Haarer, Riverview High School, 12th grade, for her video, “Make Your Own History.”
Essay winners
- First place — “The Right to Vote,” Kevin Solis, Suncoast Polytechnical High School.
- Second place — “Your Voice Speaks Volumes,” Amari Lopez, Sarasota Military Academy.
- Third place — “My Vote is on the Women of Change,” Marisa Von Bender, Booker High School.
2D artwork winners
- First place — “Your Vote, Your Voice,” China Ott, Riverview High School.
- Second place — “Votes Are Red and Blue,” Ava Parsons, Riverview High School.
- Third place — “Your Vote is Your Voice,” Ethan Webster, Suncoast Polytechnical High School.
“The YVote contest is conducted in partnership with the Sarasota County School District and is fully funded by Gulf Coast Community Foundation,” the release adds. The winning entries will be on display at Sarasota County libraries on a rotating basis, it points out.
