Members of the public are invited to a kick-off celebration for the Legacy Trail Extension on Friday, June 28, in Payne Park in downtown Sarasota.

During the event, the Sarasota County Commission will unveil the signed bond note that will finance the voter-approved project, county staff has announced.

Elected officials, volunteers and residents will gather “to mark the official start of the ‘Race to Completion,’” a news release says.

Opened in 2008, The Legacy Trail provides more than 10 miles of trail from the Venice Train Depot to Culverhouse Nature Park, the release points out.

In the November 2018 General Election, voters approved a referendum to extend the trail by nearly 8 miles “and enhance connectivity” from the city of North Port, through Venice, to downtown Sarasota, the release adds. An estimated 250,000 people use the trail annually, the release notes. The Trail  “provides safe recreational opportunities to walk, bike and run,” the release says.

Payne Park is located at 2050 Adams Lane. The event is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 10 a.m.
