Both Reinoso and Daniels Lopez placed under total bond of $60,000

A Sarasota jewelry store owner “helped Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) detectives uncover an alleged financial exploitation scheme involving an elderly woman and her late husband, resulting in the arrest of two individuals accused of stealing more than $361,000,” the Sheriff’s Office reported on Oct. 12.
Reinier Reinoso, 43, and Suyeng Margarita Daniels Lopez, 45, both of 2721 Hidden Lake Boulevard, Apt. B, in Sarasota, were placed under total bond of $60,000, their jail booking records said.
Both Reinoso and Daniels Lopez were charged with Exploitation of an Elderly Person, Grand Theft from a Person 65 Years of Age or Older, and Criminal Use of Personal Identifiable Information,” a Sheriff’s Office news release points out.
Daniels Lopez was released on bond on Oct. 8, her booking record noted. A 12th Judicial Circuit Court document said she was to wear an electronic monitoring device on one of her ankles, The Sarasota News Leader learned.
As of nearly midday on Oct. 15, Reinoso remained in custody, his booking record showed. He has entered a plea of “Not Guilty” with the court, the News Leader read in his case docket. He is being represented by Assistant Public Defender Geoffrey H. Proffitt, the document says.
The investigation into the couple’s actions began on July 20, “when Imran Din, owner of A&Z Jewelers of Sarasota, contacted the SCSO after becoming suspicious of two customers,” the news release explains.
The jewelry store is located within the Mall at University Town Center, which stands at 140 University Town Center Drive, the store’s website says.

“The pair had made several jewelry purchases totaling more than $40,000 within a short period of time,” the release continues. “When they returned to make a fourth purchase, Din requested identification, which neither individual was able to provide,” it notes. “Recognizing the suspicious circumstances,” the release says, “Din contacted law enforcement.”
As detectives investigated the case, the release points out, they discovered that the credit card used for the jewelry purchases belonged to a Sarasota man who had passed away in March. Further investigation revealed that the deceased “and his wife had been residing in an assisted living facility,” the release adds. Daniels Lopez had been assigned to care for the couple from December 2025 until her employment was terminated in June” of this year, the release continues.
The owner of the assisted living facility told a Sheriff’s Office detective that Daniels Lopez and Reinoso were married, adding that Reinoso had been employed at the facility, as well, for about six months “approximately two or three years ago,” Reinoso’s arrest warrant points out.
That warrant also explains, “Imran provided [detectives] an invoice and receipts associated with two of [the couple’s] purchases,” as well as “surveillance video depicting the defendants inside the store.” A young boy, who later was determined to be the son of the defendants, accompanied them, the warrant says.
Imran “further reported that during one of the defendants’ initial visits, the two were wearing medical scrubs,” the warrant notes, and they were accompanied by an elderly woman in a wheelchair. The warrant indicates that the elderly woman was the widow of the deceased man.

A detective also spoke with a representative of TCA TrustCorp America, which had been named the widow’s durable power of attorney, the warrant says. That company representative, Christi Olenik, who managed the power of attorney and the widow’s trust, told the detective that she had “noticed numerous suspicious transactions occurring after the death [of the husband],” the warrant adds.
Olenik provided the detective “with documentation confirming [the widow’s] diminished mental capacity and durable power of attorney,” the warrant notes.
“Detectives subsequently uncovered extensive unauthorized financial activity involving the couple’s accounts,” the news release adds. Between June 2 and Aug. 25, the release continues, “the victim’s credit card was used in more than 550 transactions totaling $240,272.85. During that same period, 21 payments totaling $361,938.23 were made from both victims’ bank accounts to the credit card company,” it adds.
“Our elderly residents deserve to feel safe, especially when placing their trust in those responsible for their care,” said Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman in the release. “Taking advantage of that trust for personal financial gain is unacceptable. We are grateful to Mr. Din whose attention and willingness to speak up helped bring this case to light,” Hoffman added.
A News Leader review of prior charges against the couple found only traffic cases involving Daniels Lopez, including three citations for failing to stop at a steady red light, a DUI and a careless driving charge.
Reinoso has faced charges of possessing counterfeit license plates (July 2025) and Dangerous Excessive Speeding, in excess of 100 mph (May of this year), as well as two counts of driving while his license was suspended or revoked.
